About

Join us for a thought-provoking discussion with researchers and activists from the field of degrowth. Akash Das (MeWeStudioX, Toronto Metropolitan University). Akash explores how economic growth operates not only through material and energy extraction but also through the organization of time—accelerating production and consumption, appropriating the time of workers and caregivers, and erasing opportunities for just sustainability transitions. He will explore whether degrowth can function as a form of temporal repair by expanding agency over time, while supporting maintenance of our societies and ecologies. Henri Chevalier (University of Waterloo). Henri will explore why many farms are effectively forced to grow simply to remain economically viable, and how this growth imperative can come at the expense of the environment and farmers’ health and well-being. He will then discuss the policies that could help break this vicious cycle and enable farms to remain viable without being forced to continually expand. Kelly Gingrich (York University). Kelly talks about how our education system upholds unsustainability, and asks what role education could play in the transition towards a post-growth future that ensures wellbeing for all and living within ecological limits. She explores what kinds of education are needed to prepare youth to transition to a better future in the face of the climate emergency. Lina Brand Correa (York University). Lina will explore the question what is it that we need to be well, and what does growth have to do with it anyway? She will explain the link between economic growth and well-being, how it can be broken, and examples of decoupling energy use and well-being. Vlad Bunea (Sufficiency Media, York University). Vlad will introduce a definition of capitalism that focuses on the fundamental causal principles that determine capitalist economic behavior. He will also define degrowth and show how degrowth can uproot capitalism from its foundations.

Intention

We will explore definitions of capitalism and degrowth. We will look at the dependency on growth that is specific to capitalism. We will explore why the capitalist mode of production must be abolished and how degrowth can help with that.
