About
What does it look like when artists and arts workers flourish? A simple utopian answer is that the broader society will be flourishing as well, uplifted by beauty and creativity. This is a guided discussion on how we can sustain a more wellbeing-centred, regenerative arts ecosystem, co-hosted by Toronto-based artist-administrator May Chook and Zarita Sharon Adhiambo. We are not economists, but we all participate in the economic ecosystems. It is important to talk about the economic systems and policies relevant to the arts, and the possibility of applying a wellbeing economy lens. What we're curious about: What are some pressing realities affecting artists and arts workers right now? How are we doing? What can we do about it? What does a wellbeing-centred arts ecosystem look like to you? To center the wellbeing of artists, arts workers and the ecosystem overall, how should the arts be funded and/or consumed? How can wellbeing be centred in arts leadership? We welcome everyone involved in the arts industry and ecosystem to participate in this discussion. Artists, arts workers, leaders, artist entrepreneurs, cultural workers, creative practitioners, researchers, arts enthusiasts, policy makers, funders, passionate volunteers, service providers, and more. The universe is the limit. About the Co-Hosts May Chook (they/she) is a Toronto-based event and project professional with over 10 years of experience working with non-profits, arts organizations, creative agencies, and small businesses. May leads full-scope projects and events with a strategic mindset, working towards a more joyful and resourceful society at large, while looking after the details. They have a background in community music facilitation and experience in community-minded, eco-friendly events. Combining their lived experience as a first-generation immigrant in Canada and a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, they collaborate with artists and social innovators on tackling complex issues through strategic projects. Zarita Sharon Adhiambo is a multidisciplinary artist, arts manager, consultant and socio-cultural curator. She works in the arts industry in Toronto and Kenya strengthening capacities of artists, institutions, and projects to enhance social relationships, advance the creative economy and sustain their operating environments. Zarita is the founder of Boma Afrikan Artists Association (Toronto) and Sekoya East Africa (Kenya), both building artists professionally to make holistic impact through their creative gifts.
Intention
Participants will reflect and learn from each other on what a wellbeing-centred, regenerative arts ecosystem looks like. Through guided discussions and activities, we will co-create our visions and plot our journey to get there. Let's start and see where it takes us.
